Chronic
The Chronic marijuana strain became incredibly famous when Dr. Dre named his debut studio album after it in 1992. Since its inception in the early 90s, Chronic has changed a bit after being rebred or refreshed and turned into a more complex strain of cannabis. Containing equal parts Sativa and Indica, this hybrid is descended from Northern Lights, AK-47, and Skunk No. 1, each of which is an acclaimed legend in its own right. Blessing users with a mix of aromas containing hints of spice, hash, skunk, pine, and herb combined with the sweetness of honey to create a super unique taste. The evenly balanced hybrid’s buzz, known for its long-lasting effects, begins with an energetic charge of creativity, exhilaration, happiness, chattiness, and a case of the giggles. When used in high quantities, Chronic can make users sleepy but typically hovers around smooth relaxation and a potential trip to the kitchen for snacks.

Chronic: A Sneaky, Strong Hybrid
Chronic seeds eventually grow into very tall, slender plants with long leaves and full buds. Light green from top to bottom, this strain’s plants are simple and beautiful. Covered in dusty white and yellow resin, the strain gives off a strong, potent aroma long before it is clipped, dried, and harvested. You don’t need to break up these nuggets to get a whiff of a hard-to-miss scent. That skunky scent is popular with seasoned cannabis fans and typically notes a very strong herb. Chronic has won seven major cannabis titles dating all the way back to 1994. This strain is the original gold medal bud taking home third prize at the ’94 High Times Cannabis Cup, first place in 2003 at the La Bella Flor Cup in Spain, first place at the 2004 High Life Cup in Spain, as well as second prize at the 2005 El Punto Cup. This strain’s legend and track record are nothing short of excellent.
Growing Tips for Our Seeds
Chronic boasts a very easy grow that can be taken on by beginning cannabis growers and brought to harvest. Because of Chronic’s potent skunky aroma, growers should take into consideration where they grow. If growing outdoors, make sure there is ample space between your plants and your neighbors. Growing indoors is a little tougher on hiding the scent. It can be done, but it’s best if you grow the plant knowing that it is easy to smell going into the grow. The plant prefers a warmer and sunny climate with lots of fresh air. The environment should also be semi-humid. Too much humidity will cause mold and bud rot to take over your plants.
Dial in Your Growing Conditions
- Indoor or Outdoor: Chronic is an easy and fun strain to grow, even for first-timers. The ideal temperature for these plants is between 72-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Begin your grow with 18 hours of light per day followed by 6 hours of darkness. Once you hit the flowering stage, you will want to dial it back to 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness.
- Moisture control: Relative humidity levels should be approximately 40-50% during the vegetative stage and dropped to between 30-40% during the flowering stage.
- Training Techniques: Intermediate and experienced growers can utilize training techniques, such as topping, pruning, and low-stress training (LST), to manage growth and enhance Chronic’s yields.
The Germination Game Plan
Before you even plant your Chronic female cannabis plants, you will first need to germinate these seeds. To do so, refer to our free germination guide, knowing that they are backed by our impressive 90% germination guarantee.
Yields, Flowering Time, and Harvest
- Flowering Time: With indoor grows, you can expect the Chronic strain to harvest after a short flowering period of 55-65 days. Outdoors, this well-balanced hybrid tends to wrap up its flowering time anywhere from the middle to the end of October.
- Yields: While Indoor yields are around 600 grams per square meter, outdoor grows typically produce up to 700 grams per plant. These yields are massive and another reason why Chronic cannabis is one of the world’s greatest strains.
Dominant Terpenes in Chronic: Pungently Skunky
The Chronic terpene profile is directly responsible for how the plant smells and tastes and the strong effects it has on its users. The most dominant terpene in this strain is caryophyllene, while myrcene and terpinolene are the major terpenes.
- Caryophyllene: Most Dominant – Notes of spice and pepper. Found in cannabis, clove, and black pepper.
- Myrcene: Secondary Terpene– Known for its relaxing and sedative effects in cannabis. Features a musky and woody aroma.
- Terpinolene: One in Ten– Dominant in about one in ten cannabis strains, terpinolene has a woody, citrus, and floral aroma.
Dominant Cannabinoids in Chronic:
Cannabinoids play an important role in Chronic seeds and are generally a huge part of most cannabis strains. That happy, energetic, and relaxed feeling you get when enjoying the Chronic strain is due to its dominant cannabinoids. Each cannabinoid does something different to the user.
- THC: The Main Character – THC is the most dominant cannabinoid on the molecular level of this strain. The crystalline compound tetrahydrocannabinol is the main ingredient of cannabis. Topping out at 20%, the THC in the balanced hybrid strain is responsible for the relaxed and happy feeling you get when using Chronic.
- CBD: Very Minimal Amounts – While the CBD levels in Chronic are around 1%, the cannabinoid is still present, and the effects are noticeable in this strain. CBD plays a smaller role in what the strain does to the user. CBD is non-psychoactive and can produce effects that help with anxiety, sleep, pain, and even stress. The CBD in the Chronic strain, even in its lower amounts, definitely has a positive effect on the user.
