Microdosing Weed

The cannabis experience differs from person to person. While many enjoy regular doses of marijuana, others sometimes experience anxiety, stress, or paranoia when consuming pot in average dose ranges. Microdosing is one way to reduce the psychoactive effects of pot while experiencing benefits such as relaxation, enhanced sleep, and a peaceful state of mind. If you’re new to the process, read on for tips on the benefits of microdosing.

What is Microdosing?

Microdosing involves taking very small, accurately measured amounts of THC at regular intervals. This practice can help alleviate anxiety and stress while encouraging relaxation. In fact, microdosing has become popular enough that the cannabis industry has developed a variety of products specifically for microdosing. These include items such as edibles, oils, and beverages.

In general, there are several reasons people choose to consume cannabis. For many, it produces feelings of relaxation, euphoria, or depending on the strain, a sense of enhanced focus and lucidity. However, standard doses of cannabis don’t necessarily have these effects on everyone. If you’re the type of person who experiences anxiety or paranoia and would prefer a mellower experience, there are several ways to evoke the benefits associated with marijuana while dramatically reducing any anxiety or stress.

If you’re a newbie and haven’t experienced many varieties yet, one solution is to simply try another strain with different properties. For example, if you’re particularly sensitive to THC, it may be helpful to simply try a strain with a lower amount of THC. However, if you’ve found that regular amounts of cannabis are problematic in general—regardless of the strain— another option is to try microdosing.

Microdosing has gained popularity in recent years, where even cannabis connoisseurs who enjoy regular doses of marijuana sometimes find microdosing beneficial in its own right. For cannabis users in general, it can be a convenient way to experience the subtler properties of your favorite strain—whether you want to eliminate anxiety, or simply require more delicate effects.

In short, microdosing produces a much subtler experience and, for many, enhances quality of life. It tends to tap into the therapeutic features of cannabis while dramatically reducing any mind-altering effects. Specifically, the benefits of microdosing can include enhanced sleep, a sense of effortless calm and peace, improved mood, stress relief, physical relaxation, and other pleasant effects.

How to Find the Perfect Dose

The optimal dose of cannabis will vary from person to person. Finding your ideal dose will be a fine-tuned process for every individual. Starting with a single milligram and proceeding slowly is generally the best way to pinpoint the amount you’ll require for maximum benefits. If you’ve found that a milligram or two isn’t enough, you may slowly increase the amount by one milligram per day until you experience the desired therapeutic effects.

While the precise amount will vary, a good jumping-off point is between 1 and 2.5 milligrams of THC for the first few days. Alternatively, you may also try a 1:1 ratio of THC to CBD.

Microdosing can include amounts up to 10 mg or greater for those with an existing THC tolerance. Although, remember that THC can produce psychoactive properties at 10 mg or greater. The ideal stopping point should be, simply, the lowest doses that produce the experience and benefits you’re seeking.

Some forms of cannabis consumption are better suited to microdosing than others. For example, vaping or smoking are much trickier to measure in precise amounts. Oils, tinctures, and edibles, on the other hand, are particularly helpful for microdosing as your THC intake can be measured much more accurately.

Intense Psychoactivity from Large Doses of Cannabis

The main psychoactive ingredient is THC, a cannabinoid that releases dopamine. Smoking is the most efficient way to experience the effects of THC and has a rapid onset of effects. When consuming cannabis in normal amounts, you’ll feel a change almost immediately. In general, THC levels will rise for a period of time averaging about 30 minutes. Your high will, on average, last several hours. Edibles, on the other hand, take effect much more slowly, and tend to last much longer–up to 8 hours. As always, the potency and duration of a strain will be influenced by the amount you consume and your cannabis tolerance.

In general, the psychoactive effects of marijuana include:

  • Euphoria
  • Potential hallucinations
  • A distorted sense of time
  • Heightened senses, such as a more vivid perception of color and sounds
  •  Lowered inhibitions.

The larger the dose of cannabis, the more intense these effects will be. While many enjoy these characteristics, it’s always best to err on the side of caution and build up your amounts slowly. By contrast, microdosing is an excellent way to mitigate these psychoactive effects.

Cannabis Products Available for Microdosing Weed

If you live in an area that has legal, licensed dispensaries, you should have access to a variety of microdosing products. These may include edibles, oils, tinctures, and other common products. However, if you’re a home grower (or want to be) we recommend exploring the option of an online seed bank. Not only is this a more cost-effective route, but you can also use your own personal cannabis plants for microdosing.

A good seed bank should have the following qualities:

A broad selection: As a general rule of thumb, a good online seed bank will provide a wider selection of weed seeds and cannabis brands than any one store.

Germination guarantee: Additionally, seeds provided by Growers Choice, specifically, are backed by a germination guarantee.

Discreet and efficient shipping: Many cannabis enthusiasts prefer purchasing their seeds online as it provides a convenient experience complete with discreet shipping.

Detailed product descriptions: Growers Choice places as strong an emphasis on education as it does on high-quality seeds. As such, each and every strain is accompanied by an in-depth description of effects, growing properties, indica-to-sativa ratio, aroma profile, and more. There are also several helpful how-to guides and informational articles available to experts and newbies alike across the Growers Choice website.

Different Types of Cannabis Strains Available

Microdosing is primarily intended for THC, as CBD, by default, does not produce any psychoactive effects. That said, the following strains of cannabis may be particularly well-suited to microdosing, as they contain higher levels of THC and a number of inherent benefits.

THC Strains for Microdosing

American Haze Feminized Seeds (24% THC)

A beautiful, potent strain, American Haze feminized seeds produce cannabis that evokes a floral, sweet, and citrus-like scent. With an 80:20 sativa to indica ratio, these seeds grow into plants known for their energy-boosting properties. Herbal, spicy, and sweet, the American Haze strain averages indoor yields of 400 grams per square meter, and outdoor yields of 500-600 grams per plant. However, consider your growing space before settling on this strain, as American Haze plants tend to be fairly tall. This strain’s cerebral effects are vitalizing and uplifting. At regular doses, users typically experience a euphoric rush, but at microdosing levels, this may manifest as more of a mellow, pleasant experience. Your existing tolerance to THC will also play a role in the potency of this strain’s effects.

Amnesia Feminized Seeds (20% THC)

Amnesia Haze is a legendary strain with longstanding popularity. It is best suited for experienced growers and requires patience to cultivate. After finishing its flowering stage, Amnesia Haze plants will produce buds that deliver distinctly intense effects. Specifically, many report feeling enhanced creativity, motivation, and bliss. This sativa-dominant strain also averages yields up to a whopping 700 grams per plat thanks to its unique combination of landrace genetics.

CBD Strains for Microdosing:

If THC products aren’t your thing, it’s also possible to microdose with CBD strains. Growers Choice has a broad selection of options; we’ve highlighted several below.

CBD Blueberry Feminized Seeds

This indica-dominant hybrid combines the classic Blueberry strain with CBD genetics. The result? A delectable variety of cannabis that is calm and uplifting without any mind-altering qualities—particularly when microdosed.  This strain is an excellent option for beginner growers, as it tends to be low-maintenance and has a shorter flowering time.

CBD Valentine X Feminized Seeds

This strain is known to enhance creativity and relaxation at normal doses. Naturally, microdosing this strain will result in milder yet poignant effects. It is known to have a unique taste reminiscent of sweet honey, pine, and earth. With a THC content of just 1%, this perfectly-balanced hybrid is easy to grow, and produces yields averaging 400 grams per square meter indoors, and 450 grams of cannabis flower per plant outdoors.

Moderate THC strains for Microdosing

Blueberry Auto-flowering Feminized Seeds

Timeless and delicious, the Blueberry strain produces a pleasant experience, and, as an autoflowering plant, is particularly easy to grow. Aromatic and sweet, this strain contains moderate amounts of THC at 16% and is known to help promote sleep and physical comfort. On average, it yields 400-500 grams per square meter indoors, and 280 to 380 grams per plant outdoors. Its modest THC content and easy-growing properties make it suitable for beginners.
