How to roll a blunt or a joint

Blunts and joints are classic cannabis products that offer great smoking experiences consumers have loved for decades. But, while smoking them is one thing, learning how to roll a joint or a blunt on your own can be a whole different story. While it sure isn’t impossible to roll these smokables on your own, it’s going to take a little time and some practice in order to do so correctly, and that’s exactly why Growers Choice Seeds is here.

Today, we’re going to break down the step-by-step process of learning how to roll a blunt or joint right at home. But, first, let’s establish what weed joints and blunts are to ensure you know the difference between these popular smoking methods.

What’s in a Blunt?

Let’s start by defining what a blunt is. Generally, a cannabis blunt is a type of smoking method where cannabis flower is rolled inside a cigar or blunt wrap. These wraps are typically made from tobacco leaves, which distinguishes blunts from joints (as we’ll note later); however, you can find hemp wraps, leaf wraps, and other non-tobacco wraps if you’d prefer.

As a whole, the key characteristics of a blunt include its thicker, darker wrapping material and its often larger size compared to joints. The tobacco leaf wrap adds a distinctive flavor and can also contribute to a more intense effect due to the nicotine content. But, you can also come across flavored blunt wraps available in options like berry, vanilla, banana, and more, giving you the chance to have a tasty smoke with your favorite flavor profiles.

Smoking a blunt is popular in the world of cannabis because of the product’s slow burn and ability to pack large amounts of weed at once. This makes them perfect for big smoke sessions with your friends where you don’t mind getting pretty stoned.

What is a Joint?

Another extremely popular method of cannabis consumption that’s been around for centuries is the joint. A cannabis joint is like a marijuana cigarette in the sense that it is ground-up cannabis rolled up tightly in a thin paper designed for smoking. These papers can be made from various materials, including hemp, rice, or flax. And, like blunts, you can sometimes find flavored rolling papers to make your smoke even tastier.

Weed joints may also include a filter or “crutch” at one end to help with stability and to prevent plant material from entering the mouth while smoking. This filter is usually made from a small piece of thick paper or card stock. And, don’t worry, making a homemade filter is quite easy.

The size and shape of joints can vary, but they are generally smaller and more discreet than blunts. This more compact size makes joints great options for outdoor activities like walking through the woods or an addition to your camping trip: they’re small, portable, and easy to smoke. And, like blunts, weed joints are very popular for communal smoking, as you can easily share them with others.

What is a Spliff?

If you’re smoking a spliff, you’re smoking a mixture of both cannabis and tobacco. You can make both blunts and joints spliffs by grinding up this mixture and loading it in your chosen smoke wrap or rolling papers.

Typically, the addition of tobacco alters the smoking experience, providing a different flavor, aroma, and effect compared to smoking pure cannabis. The tobacco can also add a nicotine buzz to the experience, which interacts with the psychoactive effects of cannabis.

The actual ratio of cannabis to tobacco in a spliff will vary widely depending on personal preference. Some people prefer a higher cannabis content with just a bit of tobacco to enhance the burn, while others may use a more balanced mix to moderate the intensity of the cannabis effects. It’s up to you and your spliff desires.

What You Need Before You Roll

Now that we’ve taught you what blunts and joints are, it’s time to learn how to roll them yourself. But, first, it’s important to understand the materials you’ll need to roll before ever getting started.

If you’re planning on smoking a blunt, you’re going to need the following materials to roll one yourself:

  • Ground cannabis (the amount depends on how large you want your blunt to be, but usually 1-2 grams is a good start)
  • A blunt wrap of your choosing
  • A small knife or blade
  • A rolling tray (or clean surface)
  • A lighter
  • (Optional): A packing tool like a pen for an easier time.

If you would like to learn how to roll a joint, your materials are going to be just slightly different. To roll a joint, you should have ground cannabis (again, the amount will vary based on the size of your papers, but usually a gram is good), rolling papers of your choosing, cardboard or thick paper to make a filter, a packing tool, and a lighter.

How to Roll a Blunt

You’re ready to learn how to roll the perfect blunt at home! Here are some easy steps that you can follow to do this in just a few minutes. However, do keep in mind that with rolling blunts, practice makes perfect.

  1. If you haven’t already, make sure to grind your cannabis. We’d suggest using a grinder to break down your cannabis into a fine, even consistency. Aim for about 1-2 grams, depending on how large you want your blunt to be.
  2. Next, take your blunt wrap and, using a small knife or a blade, carefully split the cigar/cigarillo lengthwise. Try to do this as neatly as possible. If your wrap came pre-filled with tobacco, make sure to scoop it out entirely. Again, do this carefully.
  3. Take your cannabis and evenly spread your ground flower along the length of the open blunt wrap or emptied leaf.
  4. Now, it’s time to start rolling. Begin at one end and use your thumbs and forefingers to roll the wrap back and forth, shaping the cannabis into a cylinder. This make take a few times to do correctly. Then, carefully tuck the side of the wrap closest to you over the cannabis and roll it up tightly. Lick the edge of the wrap to moisten it and complete the roll to seal the blunt. (Make sure it’s sealed along the entire length to ensure no spillage.)
  5. Use a small tool (like a pen) to gently pack down the cannabis from the open end(s) if it’s not tightly packed. This ensures an even burn. Be patient and let the blunt dry for a minute to ensure the seal holds. Some people also run a lighter quickly along the length of the blunt to help dry the saliva used to seal it.
  6. Finally, light the end of the blunt evenly, take a few gentle puffs to get it going, and enjoy!

How to Roll a Joint

You’ve learned how to roll a blunt, now, let’s focus on how to roll a joint. Again, these are going to be smaller and more compact than your typical blunt, so you likely won’t need to grind up as much weed. Here’s how to do it:

  1. If you haven’t already, make sure to grind up your desired amount of cannabis flower, ideally with a grinder to break your weed down effectively.
  2. Next, make a filter by cutting a small piece of thin cardboard or thick paper into a strip. Roll this strip into a tight spiral or accordion fold to form your filter. (This step is technically optional but recommended for a smoother, better smoking experience.)
  3. Then, take the rolling paper between your thumb and index finger of both hands, with the adhesive strip facing you and at the top. Placed the rolled filter on one end of the paper.
  4. Evenly distribute your ground cannabis on the paper, from end to end, placing it on top of the paper in a thin line. Leave a bit more space at the ends to prevent spillage.
  5. Next, you’ll use your thumbs and index fingers to gently roll the paper back and forth, shaping the cannabis into a cylinder. Again, this may take a few times to get right.
  6. Starting at the filter end, tuck the unglued side of the paper around the cannabis and filter, rolling tightly as you go. The goal is to encase the cannabis and filter in the paper. Once rolled, lick the adhesive strip and gently press it against the rolled paper. Make sure it adheres well to seal the joint.
  7. Use a pen or similar object to gently pack down the cannabis through the open end of the joint. Then, twist the excess paper at the tip, as this helps prevent any cannabis from falling out before you’re ready to smoke.
  8. Finally, you’ll light the end of the joint and take a few gentle puffs to establish an even burn. That’s it: you’ve rolled a joint!

Alternatives to Smoking

As appealing as weed joints and blunts are, not everybody in the cannabis community has the luxury of being able to smoke marijuana. Whether this be due to your residence or issues with the lungs, there are plenty of alternatives to smoking that allow you to still enjoy all of the effects of cannabis that you know and love.

Many people enjoy turning to marijuana edibles, as they provide a tasty, enjoyable cannabis experience without any smoking. You can find edibles in practically any form, including gummies, chocolates, and baked goods. (However, do keep in mind that these products take a while to kick in, so be patient before consuming a second dose.) Along similar lines, you can also enjoy cannabis tinctures, which are products you can enjoy orally or sublingually.

Other good alternatives to smoking cannabis flower would be enjoying capsules of THC or CBD, or even cannabis topicals that you apply directly to the body. Truly, there are so many options available, and many of these products you can make right at home after growing your cannabis from Growers Choice Seeds.
