History of Mesquite

Before European colonizers arrived in the area that is now known as Mesquite, the primary Indigenous tribes that lived on the land were the Caddo, Wichita, and Tawakoni. With the settler’s arrival in the early 1870s came the displacement of these people groups, whether by force, disease, or death. Mesquite was officially founded in 1873 as a stopping point for the new Texas railway system. During this time, many of the locals made their living by farming various crops, essentially living off the land and trading for goods when the train came through.

Many Texans relocated to more suburban areas like Mesquite during the post-World War II era, as many people wanted to move away from urban environments. This caused the city to expand substantially. As for the city’s name, it is derived from the mesquite trees that are abundant in the area. These trees are quite hardy and native to Texas, known for being extremely tough and adaptable.

Present-Day Mesquite

Today, Mesquite is known as the “Rodeo Capital of Texas,” particularly famous for its iconic event, Mesquite Championship Rodeo, which lures huge crowds of cowboys and tourists from all over the nation! The city is also very passionate about urban forestry and was honored by the Arbor Day Foundation as a “Tree City USA”, which we love.

The population of Mesquite is currently around 150,000 people, with many residents choosing to live in the city because of its safe, suburban tranquility, while still being close to the trendy, bustling city of Dallas. The city enjoys a mix of demographics, which has been beneficial for the overall culture and progressivism of the area.

Climate and Landscape

The landscape outside of Mesquite is stereotypical of many areas in Texas, with much of the land being flat and occasionally slightly rolling plains, which many a local likes to frolic on a hot summer day. Summers can be excruciatingly toasty, and the humidity, which can seem incessant at times, does not help. Thankfully, the winters offer a bit of a reprieve, with temperatures cooling down but not overdoing it by freezing. The seasons in Mesquite change from one to the next quite gradually, so locals have the luxury of generally being prepared and can ease into each season.

Cannabis Laws in Texas

Texas is, unfortunately, one of the states that still frowns upon recreational cannabis use, and the penalties for recreational marijuana activity can be somewhat harsh. The cultivation of marijuana, whether medical or recreational weed, is strictly prohibited, as well, with those caught generally being subjected to the same penalties as possession.

Thankfully, the state permits the use of marijuana in the form of medical products via the passage of the Texas Compassionate Use Program. Established in 2015, this program allows licensed physicians to prescribe low-THC cannabis to patients who have certain conditions, including epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, spasticity, ALS, autism, terminal cancer, incurable neurodegenerative diseases, PTSD, and all forms of cancer. Medical cannabis cardholders are then permitted to purchase a limited amount of weed from a licensed, full-service medical cannabis dispensary.

Penalties for Possession

And now the scary part! The legal repercussions for recreational cannabis activity in Texas include a potential sentence of 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $2,000 (for possession of up to 2 ounces). Possession beyond this amount results in charges that are more severe, with more than 4 ounces being a felony, carrying a mandatory minimum jail sentence of 2 years! While we know that marijuana is the absolute dream green, we want to stress extreme caution for Texan residents!

Types of Marijuana Seeds and Strains

For Texans who are itching to learn more about cannabis, we offer a little insight into some of the most popular seed types and strains below.

Landrace Strains

Landrace strains are indigenous strains of cannabis that have adapted to the local environment of their geographic region. For instance, Colombian Gold, which originated in Colombia, is genetically predisposed to prefer environmental conditions that are similar to the climate in that region.

Landrace strains are a reflection of the natural evolution of cannabis in environments from all over the world, from the mountains of Afghanistan to the plains of South Africa.

These strains are not feminized by default but instead exhibit natural sex characteristics as they would in the wild. Some landrace strains are bred to create hybrid strains, like Purple Hindu Kush, which is a result of mixing landrace strain Hindu Kush with Purple Afghani. Generally, landrace strains are known to be very resilient and hardy, having often originated from areas with harsh climates.

Feminized Marijuana Seeds

Feminized weed seeds are growers’ dream seeds, in contrast to regular seeds, since they only produce female plants and not male plants. Female plants are the moneymakers because they give way to THC- and CBD-rich buds, which male plants do not. Feminized cannabis plants are photoperiods, so they switch from the vegetative to the flowering phase with changes in the light schedule.

These seeds typically take longer to flower than auto-flowering seeds, and the plants are generally larger (which means more juicy buds to harvest at the end of the season). As an example, the Candyland and Goji OG strains can have yields of up to 1,000 grams per plant when cultivated outdoors!

Auto-Flowering Marijuana Seeds

Auto-flowering marijuana seeds are feminized strains that have had cannabis Ruderalis genetics added to them, which gives them the seemingly magic powers to flower independent of light conditions! It also bestows these seeds incredible resilience when faced with outdoor conditions that are not necessarily tame. The first auto-flowering strains emerged in the early 2000s and, unsurprisingly, had cultivators ranting and raving their praises!

Auto-flowering strains are known for their speedy growth and quick growth cycles, which essentially give growers the option to cultivate multiple crops in a single season. As a bonus, most auto-flowering strains like White Widow Auto and Berner’s Cookies Auto are incredibly resistant to common pests and diseases, including mold!

Cultivating Cannabis in Mesquite, Texas

While cannabis home grows are currently a strict no-no for Texan residents, the laws are always subject to change! Better to get a head start now than fall behind late, right? Below, we give a brief overview of cultivating in a hydroponic setup, as well as where to purchase high-quality cannabis seeds.

Hydroponic Growing

For those who don’t know, the hydroponic cultivation of cannabis is when plants are grown in a nutrient-rich solution without soil. Hydroponics can be an excellent option for growers, as it allows for precise control over the nutrients the plants receive, which enhances the overall growth and potency of the plant. This method is also very space-efficient and can be set up and operated entirely indoors, which is ideal for cultivators who do not have outdoor space or need to grow a little more discreetly.

Cannabis plants in hydroponic setups generally grow faster than if they were grown in soil since they have direct access to nutrients and oxygen. These systems also eliminate the threat of soil-borne pests and diseases, ultimately reducing the stress and amount of work for the cultivator. While hydroponics can be the perfect option for some, there are definitely startup costs that growers might want to consider before pulling the trigger!
