Lansing, Michigan: An Introduction

Lansing, the capital of Michigan and home of the Oldsmobile, is a beautiful historic city that was founded in the mid-1800s. Not only is Lansing the seat of government for the state, but it is also home to the top research college Michigan State University, which was founded in 1855.

With a population of over 112,000, the city of Lansing is the sixth largest in Michigan. This affordable, family-friendly city is filled with stunning green spaces, such as the Lansing River Trail, which is a 13-mile trail that runs along the Grand River and the Red Cedar River; a 200-acre park; and the picturesque rose gardens in Frances Park.

Known as “Michigan’s Festival Capital,” Lansing hosts more than 50 festivals and events year-round, where in the spring and summer locals and visitors pack the city’s streets, which are filled with music, culinary delights from around the world, and art. Come autumn, the city is awash in autumnal sights and sounds, and winter kicks off with the Silver Bells in the City festival. Lansing is also the location where legalized medical and recreational cannabis were signed into law in 2008 and 2018, respectively.

Lansing’s Cannabis Regulatory Agency

As the capital of the first state in the Midwest to legalize both medical and recreational marijuana, Lansing is home to the Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA), which is Michigan’s regulatory program that seeks to stimulate the growth of cannabis-related businesses and to ensure consumers’ safe access to cannabis.

Of its many functions, the CRA runs and oversees the Michigan Medical Marijuana Program (MMMP), which is the program that executes the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act that Michigan voters approved in 2008. In addition, the agency is in charge of regulating the state’s adult-use recreational provisioning centers and licensees in keeping with the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act (MRTMA).

Michigan’s Marijuana Laws

Provided below is a rundown of current cannabis laws and “special” cannabis terminologies that apply to all of Michigan:

  • Michigan, aka the “Wolverine State,” spells “marijuana” as “marihuana” in their official regulations and formal communications.
  • Cannabis dispensaries in Michigan are officially known as “provisioning centers.”

Age Requirements in Lansing for Accessing Medical and Recreational Marijuana

To apply for a medical marijuana card one must be a legal resident and at least 18 years old, whereas recreational adult-users must be 21+.

How Many Cannabis Plants Can I Cultivate in Lansing?

Licensed medical and recreational adult users are allowed to grow up to 12 marijuana plants at home, so long as the plants are cultivated in a secure grow space that is not visible to the public. It is important to remember that medical and recreational users are allowed to grow 12 pot plants per household, and not 12 weed plants per each adult member of the household.

However, there is one exception to this rule in that a licensed caregiver can be a patient with a medical marijuana card and help up to five other patients who each have their own medical cannabis card. In this case, the caregiver is allowed to grow a total of 72 cannabis plants if, and only if, they have all six medical cannabis cards.

Why Lansing’s Indoor and Outdoor Growers Choose Growers Choice Seeds

While there are plenty of provisioning centers in Lansing that sell weed seeds, the fact is that their focus is more on providing a wide range of marijuana-related products as opposed to an extensive selection of cannabis seeds. As such, those who practice cannabis cultivation in Michigan’s capital consistently turn to Growers Choice Seeds, which is one of the premier online seed banks around, as we have hundreds of feminized and autoflowering strains available on our website for highly affordable prices.

Other reasons that Lansing locals buy their marijuana seeds from us at Growers Choice Seeds are explained below.

  • Feminized Cannabis Seeds: All of the landrace and hybrid cannabis strains that we sell come in feminized seed form be they for growing photoperiod plants or autoflowering strains. The reason we only sell feminized cannabis seeds and not regular seeds is because feminized seeds have a 99% likelihood of providing growers with female cannabis plants, which are what produce the cannabinoid-rich nuggets that cultivators and users are seeking. Regular seeds, on the other hand, will mature into both male and female plants, and your average at-home cultivator has little to no use for male pot plants as they serve as pollinators as opposed to cannabis flower producers.
  • Special Prices for Weed Seeds: Not only are all of our landrace and hybrid strains available at affordable prices, but we also feature discounts on our wholesale marijuana seeds. In addition, we always have incredible sales on a rotating selection of our indica and sativa strains.
  • Germination Guarantee: We are so confident in our high-quality cannabis seeds that we offer the highest germination rate guarantee in the industry, where we promise that if you follow our germination process and 90% of your marijuana seeds still fail to germinate we will replace the duds for free.

Seeds Available From Growers Choice

As mentioned above, we only sell feminized photoperiods and feminized autoflower seeds, which will both render female plants.

The differences between these two seed types are explained below.

Feminized Cannabis Seeds

Feminized seeds are photoperiods, which means that they are fully reliant on having their light cycle changed for them to transition from their vegetative growth stage to their flowering phase. While the exact hours of light per day that photoperiod plants require can vary from strain to strain, the general rule of thumb is that they need 18 hours of sunlight (or grow lights) and 6 hours of darkness per day during their seedling stage and vegetative period, and then an even 12 hours of light and dark exposure for them to flourish in their flowering period.

While this may seem like too big of a task for first-time growers, the fact is we offer plenty of feminized strains, like Candyland and Berry White that are low-maintenance growers. Plus we provide a free online blog that is chocked full of information on things like how to grow cannabis indoors and out, what you need to know to ensure the healthy growth of your marijuana crops, what marijuana nutrients you should use, how light cycles work, and so much more.

Feminized Autoflowering Seeds

Autoflower seeds are feminized strains that have had ruderalis added to their genetics. This addition imparts the following benefits to them:

  • The ability to automatically flip from their vegetative stage to their flowering stage, which makes them that much more advantageous to beginner growers, and to those who wish to do some outdoor cultivation but live in a part of the world that gets extended hours of daylight.
  • Unlike feminized photoperiods, which can only produce a single harvest, auto seeds often have the potential to produce up to 3-4 successful harvests in one year!
  • They usually have a shorter flowering time. This also makes them particularly conducive for outdoor growing in places like Lansing, which has an outdoor growing season of just over 150 days on average. This means that autoflowering strains like Cream, Diablo, and Power Kush, which should each complete their flowering stage in anywhere from 6-8 weeks, are especially excellent choices for outdoor cultivation in Lansing.
  • They tend to produce shorter and more resilient pot plants that are often more resistant to sudden changes in temperatures, mold, mildew, pests, and common diseases.

Nutrients for Ensuring Healthy Plants

One of the most important things to consider in order to ensure plant health is to make sure you are feeding your cannabis crops the proper nutrients.

NPK: The Big Three

The three main nutrients that are vital to the health of your weed plants are: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K), or “NPK.”

When you are looking at nutrient-rich super soils or nutrient solutions you will likely see numbers that go along with each letter. For example, NPK 9-5-8 means that the nutrient solution has 9% nitrogen, 5% phosphorus, and 8% potassium.

While no such thing as a “perfect” nutrient solution exists, experienced growers say that what matters most is that you maintain the balance of NPK, where you don’t want the percentage of N, P, and K to all be equal. Instead, advanced growers recommend the following:

  • During the vegetative growth period you will want to use fertilizers or solutions that have more N than P and K.
  • During the flowering period you then want the opposite with a lower percentage of N and higher quantities of P and K.

Note that not only is checking the NPK quantities important when you’re selecting your nutrient solution, but you also want to make sure whether it was made for hydroponics or soil, as each growing medium has its own specific nutritional needs.

Last Tips Before You Go and Grow

As mentioned earlier, Lansing’s frost-free outdoor growing season usually lasts just over 150 days starting in early May and ending in early October. As such, if you are planning to raise your marijuana crops as outdoor plants, you may want to start their germination process indoors near the middle of April so that you can plant your seedlings as soon as the weather allows.

Lastly, remember that if you’re wanting to grow a strain that requires much warmer temperatures or higher humidity levels than Lansing’s summers provide, no need to fret as you can always grow indoors year-round!
