About Dawson City, Yukon

Synonymous with the Klondike Gold Rush, Dawson City, which is officially known as the “City of Dawson,” in the Yukon Territory of Canada, is located on the banks of the Yukon River. In 1998, the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nations people, who have been the rightful caretakers of this area for centuries, signed a Self-Goverment agreement that granted them their individual land claim and inherent right to self-govern themselves–a process that the Yukon First Nations started all the way back in the 1970s! So, while the City of Dawson does have a “traditional” Canadian-style territorial government that is presided over by its mayor and town officially, the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in also have their own government run by their own elected officials from within the tribe.

Today, Dawson City, which was once dubbed “The Paris of the North” thanks to its gold rush glory days, has wisely used the gold dust of its past to create a thriving gold mining and tourism industry. The City of Dawson has fully embraced its glory days as a good-time town by featuring elegant paddle wheelers on the Yukon, tour guides dressed in gold rush era attire, daily shows at the Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall–Canada’s oldest casino, gold panning competitions, and even… outhouse races!

Along with its infamous history, this northern locale in the western part of the Yukon is also home to a vibrant arts scene, the 2,200 square kilometer Tombstone Territorial Park that lies within the traditional lands of the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in people, the aurora oval of the breathtaking Aurora borealis, and, a thriving medical and recreational cannabis community of users and growers.

Dawson City Cannabis Laws

Canada, which is home to 10 provinces and 3 territories of which Yukon is one, legalized medical marijuana back in 2001, thereby paving the way for the legalization of cannabis on the recreational level some 17 years later in 2018.

Medical cannabis patients in Dawson City, Yukon, and all throughout the nation must adhere to the rules and regulations laid out by Health Canada, which is part of the federal government.

On the other hand, recreational marijuana users and growers who reside in Dawson City must adhere to Yukon’s territorial government regulations. This is because, even though adult-use marijuana is legal all throughout Canada, every province and territory has the right to create its own specific pieces of government legislation around items, such as:

  • The minimum age for use
  • Whether or not at-home cultivation is allowed (and if so, where it is or is not allowed)
  • How many plants per household can be grown
  • Home storage limit
  • Public consumption of cannabis allowances
  • If there can be physical marijuana dispensaries and/or online sales, etc.

Canada’s Medical Marijuana Program

As a branch of the federal government, Health Canada has not set a minimum age requirement. Instead, prospective medical marijuana patients need to see a physician for a “medical cannabis assessment.” Provided the patient is determined to have a qualifying condition, they can register with Health Canada, which, amongst many things, will allow them to possess up to 150 grams or a 30-day supply of cannabis flower or marijuana products in public.

As for growing medical cannabis at home, a registered patient’s registration certificate will state how many plants they can grow at their private residence and where they can be cultivated.

Dawson City’s Recreational Marijuana Laws

While Dawson currently has just one brick-and-mortar dispensary, the fact that the territorial government allows for adult-use sales via government-operated online retailers, as well as the at-home cultivation of up to four plants per household with no set home storage limits, the city’s less-than 1,800 residents don’t seem to mind.

In keeping with all other provinces and territories in the nation, except for Alberta and Quebec, Yukon allows those 19 and older to buy, use, and grow cannabis for non-medical purposes.

Perhaps the strictest restriction in the Yukon, and therefore Dawson City, is that recreational users cannot combust marijuana in public, which all things considered is far from being a “harsh” limitation.

Where Dawson City Locals Buy Their Cannabis Seeds

With limited options locally, medical and recreational residential growers in Dawson consistently turn to online seed banks like Growers Choice Seeds. While there are numerous seed banks in existence, what sets us head and shoulders above the fray is that we have an extensive catalog of feminized and autoflowering cannabis seeds that all come with a phenomenal germination guarantee that if 90% of your seeds don’t “pop,” aka “germinate,” then we will replace the duds for free.

Some of the other reasons that Dawson locals love ordering from us are as follows:

  • Our speedy and discreet shipping
  • Our discounts on wholesale seeds
  • Our promotional sales on a rotating selection of top-notch landrace and hybrid feminized seed strains
  • Our educational resources provided in our free blogs
  • Our friendly and knowledgeable customer service team

Feminized and Autoflowering Seeds

We at Growers Choice only sell feminized seeds, which means that whether you purchase a strain like Black Mamba, which is a feminized photoperiod strain, or Gushers, an autoflowering feminized strain, from us, you have a 99% chance of ending up with bud-producing, female plants.

This is also why we do not sell regular cannabis seeds as they will produce both male and female plants. While male plants serve a vital role as pollinators in the creation of new strains, the majority of at-home residential growers only want the cannabinoid-rich buds that female plants yield.

Feminized Photoperiods vs. Autoflowering Feminized

In short, while all of our autoflowering seeds are feminized, not all of our feminized seeds are autoflowers.

While this may sound like a head-scratcher of a statement, it’s actually not that complicated. Basically, feminized seeds are photoperiods, which means that they cannot move into their flowering stage without outside intervention in their light cycles, and autoflowering feminized seeds transition into their flowering period based on their age. As such, in a place like Dawson that gets the midnight sun from about the end of April until the end of August, you’ll want to grow your feminized strains indoors.

The reason that autoflowers aren’t reliant on light cycles is that they contain anywhere from 10% to 20% ruderalis, which is a hardy landrace strain that is native to the colder regions of Central Asia. Not only does this addition allow them to automatically flip to flower, but it also provides them with the tendency to be more resilient, smaller, and faster flowering than their feminized photoperiod counterparts. As such, while there are definitely several autoflowers like Cherry Diesel and California Orange that require intermediate to master cultivators to successfully grow them, autos are generally considered to be easier for newbies to cultivate. Plus, the fact that they tend to be more compact makes them especially well-suited for indoor growing, which is especially important in a place like Dawson which averages just 70 frost-free days per year.

Growing Your Cannabis Garden in Dawson City, Yukon

As mentioned above, not only do cannabis growers in Dawson have a very short frost-free season as well as the midnight sun to deal with, but the fact that they live in a subarctic climate means they also must contend with things like permafrost.

While Dawson may have once been rich in gold, it’s not necessarily rich in fertile soil on account of much of it being either permafrost–soil that is frozen year-round–or soil that is shallow with little organic material, cold temperature profiles, etc. As a result, gardeners of all kinds in the area who wish to do any kind of outdoor gardening in the area’s warmer months will need to supplement their soil by adding compost to it.

Coupled with Dawson’s extremely short growing season, extended summer daylight hours, and nighttime temperatures that still get down into the 30s (Fahrenheit) in May, you’ll understand why most opt to either grow their cannabis crops indoors or, at the very least, in a greenhouse.

Germinating Your Seeds

Even if you do decide to cultivate your cannabis plants outside (hopefully in a greenhouse), because of how short Dawson’s growing season is, you would be wise to start by germinating your cannabis seeds from Growers Choice indoors as this will allow you to get your seedlings going in a “safer” environment. Then, once it’s warm enough, you can transplant your seedlings outside.

There are numerous ways to germinate seeds, but our favorite way is probably the simplest and cheapest. Provided below are the basics to get you going, or rather, growing:

The Glass and Paper Towel Method

Items needed: a glass of lukewarm water (distilled, rain, or spring water); paper towels; and a plate or tray.

Simply soak your seeds for about 14-18 hours in the water. Then pour some of the water and all of the seeds onto the paper towels that you’ve placed on the plate or tray–making sure to drain off any excess water. Fold the now damp (but not soaking) paper towels over your seeds so that they’re completely covered. Place your tray of wet paper towels and seeds in a warm and dark area and wait for them to germinate!

In the interim, keep your seeds moist by pouring some more water onto the paper towels, but not to the point where your seeds are sitting in pools of water. Once you see a 1/4-3/4 inch taproot, you can then plant your seeds in soil, etc. (Normally it takes 3-7 days, but on occasion can take 14.)
