Buying cannabis seeds in Cochrane, Alberta

Cochrane, Alberta

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the town of Cochrane in the Canadian province of Alberta, the sections below are intended to help you familiarize yourself a bit more with this rapidly growing municipality.

Background History of Cochrane

The town of Cochrane is the traditional and rightful land of the Iyethka peoples of the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney Bands, as well as the Tsuut’ina, the Niitsitapi peoples of Siksika, Piikani, and Kainai Bands. It is also home to the North West Métis, Inuit, and other Indigenous peoples, and, unfortunately, as is the case with all lands in Canada and the U.S., was colonized by Europeans and/or their descendants.

Cochrane Ranch, which was created by Canadian Senator Matthew Henry Cochrane in 1881, became the “starting point” for what would 90 years later become known as the “Town of Cochrane.” However, it wasn’t until 1903 that the area began to see more residents, with a grand total of 395 residing in Cochrane by 1911. By 1971, 800 folks called this area home, and Cochrane was officially incorporated as a town.

The 1970s were a time of expansion and modernization, attracting more and more residents. In 2003 the town celebrated its 100 years of existence by finishing its revitalization of its downtown area, which significantly increased its tourism industry, and by 2023, just under 36,000 residents called the town of Cochrane home.

Cochrane Today

As a town within the Calgary Metropolitan Region, residents of Cochrane only have to drive approximately 18 kilometers to reach Calgary’s city limits. As such, while the town itself is a smaller community, locals can easily head into Calgary when they need the culture and atmosphere that comes with being in a large city.

Its downtown area is known for its Western heritage style and breathtaking views of the surrounding foothills and Rocky Mountains. However, while Cochrane is a small historic town tucked into the foothills along the banks of the Bow River, this notoriously friendly locale is not exactly a step back into time as it has become one of Canada’s largest tech hubs–making it one of Alberta’s fastest growing and most forward-thinking municipalities.

While all of Alberta allows for the at-home indoor and outdoor cultivation of cannabis plants for both medical and recreational purposes, outdoor growers in Cochrane do have a slight challenge as their town not only has an average of just 99 frost-free days per year, but due to being in the foothills of the Rockies the area experiences a combination of cool wings and warm Chinook winds that at times have been known to increase temperatures by 22 degrees in just one hour! However, this doesn’t mean it’s impossible to grow marijuana crops outside in Cochrane. As such, after we go over some basics about various cannabis laws in the area, and why Growers Choice Seeds is so popular amongst local growers, we’ll provide more info on how to cultivate cannabis seeds in a setting like Cochrane.

Medical and Recreational Cannabis Laws in Cochrane, Alberta

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Canada’s medical and recreational cannabis laws–the latter details of which are determined by each provincial and territorial government–the most important aspects of each are provided below.

Canada’s Medical Marijuana Laws

Canada’s medical cannabis program, which is overseen by Health Canada, applies to all of its citizens no matter which province or territory they reside in. For specific details about the country’s medical marijuana program, which does not have a minimum age requirement, please refer here, where you can find out everything you need to know about possession amounts, where medical cannabis can be used, and laws as they relate to the at-home cultivation of medical cannabis plants.

Recreational Marijuana in Cochrane

When it comes to the purchase, possession, use, and cultivation of recreational cannabis, the province of Alberta is the most “lax” in the nation with the lowest minimum age requirement for recreational users being 18. In addition, it is one of the few provinces in Canada that allows for government-run cannabis dispensaries plus public and private cannabis retailers to operate in its provincial jurisdiction.

Those who are 18+ can possess and carry up to 30 grams of cannabis, may grow a total of four female plants per household, and do not have an at-home storage limit.

However, although Alberta’s provincial government says that marijuana can be smoked/vaped in public areas where tobacco is permitted, they also make it clear that you need to know what the local laws are in a particular municipality. And, when it comes to Cochrane, you are not permitted to smoke, vape, or consume cannabis in any public place in the town.

Why Cochrane Cultivators Buy Their Feminized Seeds from Growers Choice Seeds

From novice to experienced growers, more and more of Cochrane’s cannabis cultivators are turning to us at Growers Choice Seeds for procuring their favorite landrace and hybrid strains in weed seed form because of our well-earned reputation as being one of the most reputable seed banks around. Plus the fact that we ship our cannabis seed packs out quickly and discreetly doesn’t hurt either.

Some of the other reasons that cannabis growers in Cochrane consistently buy their cannabis seeds from us are provided below.

  • Extensive Selection: Thanks to our relationship with a wide range of reputable cannabis breeders from all around, we at Growers Choice Seeds can offer a fantastic selection of top-notch cannabis seeds for sale.
  • Feminized Seeds: We only sell feminized cannabis seeds that are photoperiods and autoflowering seeds because they have a 99% likelihood of producing all-female, bud-bearing plants, which is exactly what your typical at-home cannabis grower in Cochrane wants and needs. This is also why we won’t sell regular seeds, as they will produce both male and female plants, and the majority of at-home growers need or want female plants.
  • Cost and Sales: All of our feminized seeds are affordably priced, and we have a huge inventory of discounted wholesale seeds for sale too. On top of these two things, we feature regular rotating sales on a wide variety of new, classic, rare, and popular strains of cannabis.
  • Germination Guarantee: Our germination guarantee is one of the highest in the industry, where we promise that if 90% of your cannabis seeds don’t germinate, we will replace the duds for free, provided you follow our germination guide.

Navigating Cochrane’s Environmental Conditions for Growing Weed Outdoors

So, as mentioned at the start, Cochrane averages 99 frost-free days for growing crops outdoors, which means growing some types of fruits and vegetables to their full maturity can be a challenge. In addition, the cool winds from the Rockies and the warm Chinook winds can become a big issue for outdoor growers, as not only can a strong wind “sap up” moisture from the soil and the leaves of various vegetation, including cannabis plants, but the quick changes in temperatures brought on by these winds can cause plants in their vegetative stage to enter their flowering stage too quickly and begin to bud prematurely.

While it’s best to speak directly with experienced growers in Cochrane, a couple of things we would suggest for successfully cultivating your cannabis seeds into healthy female plants outdoors are as follows:

  1. Start the germination process indoors before the outdoor growing season starts and get your seedlings going inside before transplanting them.
  2. Consider growing your outdoor cannabis plants in outdoor structures like a greenhouse, cold frame, row cover, or hoop house. Not only do they provide added protection against a sudden, unexpected change in temperature or frost, but they could potentially allow you to plant your outdoor weed crops a little earlier in the spring or harvest them a little bit later in the autumn.
  3. Choose hardier strains of cannabis for outdoor cultivation, like the feminized seed strains of Purple Hindu Kush and Grape Kush, or the autoflowering strains of Cinex or Candy Kush.

Indoor Growing

With Cochrane having such a short outdoor growing season with its various environmental challenges, cultivating landrace and hybrid strains inside is also a popular, and necessary, option once the first frost of the year hits.

Some of the many benefits of being an indoor grower include having complete control over the temperature, humidity, ventilation, light cycles, soil quality, etc. This is especially useful in a place like Cochrane and for growers who want to grow a strain, such as Black Cherry Punch, that requires a Mediterranean-like climate and consistent humidity levels.

Additionally, growing your favorite feminized and autoflowering strains indoors gives you an unlimited growing season that is never impacted by changes in the season. Finally, another big bonus that comes with growing your cannabis crops inside allows you to grow your plants in a more hygienic environment, as you are the one who is in charge of how clean (or dirty) the growing environment is. This can be especially important for those growing medical-grade quality cannabis plants for patients with a compromised immune system.
