What’s the backstory of the Northern Lights strain?

By mixing an Afghani indica with a Thai sativa, the Northern Lights strain was created. Hailing from the outskirts of Seattle, Washington, it was propagated out of the Netherlands in 1985 and has since become a legend in its own right. Its reputation for being fast-acting and an instant hit is everything Northern Lights is about. For this reason, it has gained traction in California and has quickly climbed up the ranks as one of the most in-demand strains. What’s an Afghani indica, you ask? The Afghani strain is a sweet-smelling landrace plant that originated in the Afghan mountains. This pure-breed strain is a heavily resonated flower that is popular for its strong and pure sedative effects that have served many consumers in the cannabis scene. It’s no wonder the Northern Lights strain has such soothing effects—its parent strain was bred for one reason and one reason only, to help you relax and unwind.

How does the Northern Lights strain fit into my lifestyle?

While there are hundreds of cannabis strains to choose from on the Growers Choice Seeds website, there is a select handful that we would consider “fan favorites” or the “OG classics.” The Northern Lights strain is one of them. It’s a timeless indica-dominant strain that has been said to help restless sleepers for decades. When you think of classic cannabis strains, these may also come to mind…

When’s the best time to smoke the Northern Lights strain?

There’s a time and a place for everything, including the Northern Lights strain. This indica-heavy strain is best consumed at night, in the evening, or over the weekend when you are able to relax at home without the weight of the world on your shoulders. That’s not to say you can’t smoke the Northern Lights strain during the day, but rest assured (pun intended) that you’d feel rather sleepy, groggy, and simply too lazy to do anything other than sit on the couch, watch your favorite TV show, and snack on a bag of chips. Indeed, the best time to smoke the Northern Lights strain is exactly as its name suggests…when you’re able to see the Northern Lights at night. It might be able to help you stop tossing and turning at 3 o’clock in the morning, and might help you wake up feeling refreshed and fully recovered instead of yawning and hitting the snooze button on your phone.

What’s the best way to grow the Northern Lights strain?

We’re so glad you asked. This is one of our favorite strains to grow simply due to the beautiful colors you’ll see around flowering time. The Northern Lights strain is a fan favorite for another reason besides its soothing effects…and that’s its ability to grow and thrive in a multitude of environments. The Northern Lights strain can successfully grow in the hands of novice and experienced gardeners alike. It is a relatively small-to-average growing plant, with a distinctive amount of resinous buds. Due to its smaller size, you can easily grow the Northern Lights strain indoors, whether it be in your basement, garage, or a downtown city apartment without a lot of extra legroom. The Northern Lights strain can be grown indoors and also outdoors for all experienced growers. If grown outdoors, the Northern Lights strain prefers a warm and sunny environment, similar to the Mediterranean, California, or North African settings. Surprisingly, growers in Colorado have said this strain thrives outdoors before it gets below 40 degrees F. This plant can flourish into a tree when kept in full sunlight and tended to carefully but is generally not a fussy plant to care for, and is great for beginner growers looking for indica landrace seeds. This indica strain reportedly takes an average of 7 to 9 weeks to flower, although there are times when it is ready for harvest after only 7 weeks. Northern Lights cannabis strain can yield an average of 18 ounces per square meter in a healthy indoor environment. When kept in its preferred West Coast sunny climate, this strain can give a generous harvest. This indica dominant landrace seed can produce an estimate of up to 22 ounces per plant and is usually ready for harvest around the middle of October.

What makes the Northern Lights strain so popular?

Like most of its Indica-based ancestors and descendants, Northern Lights is highly recommended for evening use. We all know someone who experiences sleep issues, it’s simply the environment we live in these days always being connected via social media and technology. The Northern Lights strain is one of the purest indica strains around (95% indica, 5% sativa) which makes it a highly sedative strain—perfect to smoke right before bed. Smoking the Northern Lights strain often leads to the munchies, so go out and grab some snacks before you commit. Northern Light’s exact lineage and history are obscured in mystery but it is generally believed to be a mix of two landrace building block strains: Thai and Afghani. The strain flowers for six to eight weeks and yields up to 125 grams per square meter. In the average greenhouse setup, the Northern Lights strain produces roughly 100 grams per plant. As a general rule of thumb, you can expect one cannabis plant to produce up to $200 worth of flower, which will save you a lot of money in the long run. This strain is a definite choice for those that prefer quality and ease over quantity.
