About Aurora, Colorado

Known for its proximity to the stunningly awe-inspiring Rocky Mountain Range, Aurora is the third largest city in Colorado and is located in the north-central part of the state just over 9 miles outside of the Mile High City of Denver. While social progressiveness and an overall embrace of lifestyles and persuasions that don’t always fall within Midwest mainstream society are things that are often associated with the State of Colorado, racial diversity isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of the Centennial State.

However, Aurora is something of an exception as it is a city that is known for its diversity; it is home to a large Latinx population, as well as members of Black, Indigenous, and Asian people groups. This rich tapestry of cultures and ethnicities is played out in Aurora’s culture, art, and food scenes. Even more importantly, having such a strong BIPOC presence makes this area that much more of a vibrant and truly interesting place to live and visit, as it serves to promote an overall attitude in its citizens embodying genuine respect for those who are “different” from them. In fact, as a point of interest, more than 90 different languages are spoken in the city’s public school system.

Not only is Aurora rich in diversity and within close proximity to nature and outdoor activities, but it also boasts over 300 days of sunshine on an annual basis. Sadly, its residents who are outdoor growers of marijuana are unable to take advantage of all of this abundant sunshine, as it is illegal to grow your cannabis crops outside in Colorado, but growing marijuana indoors is 100% legal–all of which we will explain further in the following sections.

The History of Colorado’s Cannabis Laws

In both 2000 and 2012, the majority of Aurora residents voted in step with the majority of their fellow Coloradans in approving both medical marijuana and the adult use of recreational cannabis, respectively.

As one of the first two states in the country to legalize recreational marijuana, Aurora at-home cannabis growers are very much “in the know” when it comes to figuring out the best way to procure their favorite cannabis seeds, with a high percentage of them relying on online cannabis seed banks like Growers Choice Seeds as the local marijuana retail market isn’t really set up to offer the wide range of quality cannabis seeds that we can provide.

As is common for many states where medical and/or recreational marijuana is legal, each county or town in Colorado has its own specific laws, especially around at-home cultivation. As such, if you are new or moving to Aurora, which is considered part of Arapahoe County, it is your responsibility to know their exact marijuana laws.

Medical and Recreational Marijuana Laws in Aurora

Provided in the subsections below are some of the most important state and local laws you should know if you are planning to cultivate your own weed plants at home in Aurora.

Aurora’s Cultivation Laws for Medical and Recreational Users

To start, whether you are a registered medical marijuana patient, caregiver, or recreational user, not only must you grow your cannabis crops in an “enclosed, secure space” it is illegal in Aurora to grow your marijuana plants outdoors, including in a greenhouse.

Both medical marijuana patients, caregivers, and adult users who are 21+ can cultivate up to six female marijuana plants, with no more than three being mature flowering plants. In addition, Arapahoe County, and therefore Aurora, limits the maximum number of cannabis plants that can be grown per residence–not per resident–to 12, with three or less being mature.

Cultivating Weed Indoors in Aurora

While it may sound like a huge bummer that growing your indica and sativa strains as outdoor plants is illegal in Aurora, and all of Colorado, the fact is there are plenty of advantages to growing indoors.

Advantages of Indoor Growing

For starters, cultivators in Aurora don’t have to contend with the 157-day outdoor growing season that though generally warm to hot and clear consistently, still experiences thunderstorms that bring with them hail and strong winds, which could severely damage outdoor crops.

Plus, since outdoor cannabis cultivation is illegal in Aurora, indoor weed cultivators can grow most any kind of strain year-round, including ones like Hippie Crippler, Pineapple Haze, and Grapefruit Diesel, which require semi-humid to humid Mediterranean-like settings. The reason this is possible is because indoor growing allows cultivators to create, adjust, and maintain the kind of grow space that matches the specific temperature and humidity needs of whichever strains they’re growing at any given point.

Lastly, Aurora at-home growers don’t have to worry about protecting their marijuana harvests from would-be thieves or have to create any kind of protective fencing so that their pets or wild critters don’t get into their crops.

Tips for Cultivating Indoor Weed Plants

For novice growers who are new to indoor cultivation, here are just some of the most important basics you’ll need to be mindful of to get your indoor growing space going.

  • Grow lights: If you have a small indoor space, then using LED or fluorescent lights are great options. However, if you have a larger space, advanced growers recommend that you use high-intensity discharge (HID) lights as they offer the most intense lighting. No matter your light setup, you will need to make sure that the space is “light-tight,” which means you don’t want any of the light to “leak in” when your feminized photoperiod plants need their approximate hours of darkness during their vegetative stage and 12 hours during their flowering phase.
  • Ventilation: Since no more than 12 plants can be grown indoors in Aurora, it’s more than likely that you will be cultivating your marijuana plants in a small enough space where using an everyday fan will more than suffice. The reason you must use a fan is that your indoor crops require fresh air to grow and thrive as healthy plants since the circulation of air helps to prevent mold and mildew from forming. Plus, if you are growing a pungent strain like White Widow or Oregon Diesel, using an exhaust fan can help to redirect airflow.
  • Humidity and Temperature Levels: Apart from having good airflow, you will most likely need a dehumidifier to effectively deal with controlling humidity levels, and if you’re growing in a larger space, like a two-car garage, you may need to have an air conditioning/heating unit.

Other Necessities for Indoor Growing

  • Containers: The three main points to consider when you are choosing the appropriate growing container for your marijuana plants are: space, drainage, and oxygen flow. Advanced growers recommend that newbies start with a 1-gallon pot, and then as your indoor plants mature, you can move them to a 5, 7, or 10-gallon one.
  • Growing Medium: Some strains grow better in hydroponics, others in soil, and still others will thrive in either. If you’re new to cultivating marijuana indoors, you will probably be best off choosing strains that can be grown in the soil before attempting hydroponics, aeroponics, etc.

  • Training, Trimming, Topping: Once you’ve started feeling comfortable with growing low-maintenance strains indoors that require just some basic trimming, etc., you can then move on to ones that require a bit more care. For example, some strains will do best with the Sea of Green (SOG) or Screen of Green (ScrOG) training methods, and others will require regular “topping,” which is the removal of upper branches so that light can reach the lower-growing nodes.

Feminized Seeds vs. Autoflowering Seeds

Of the numerous reasons that growers in Aurora, and all throughout North America and overseas, choose to buy their marijuana seeds from us at Growers Choice is because we only sell feminized strains, be they photoperiods or autoflowers. In addition, we stand by our statement that we only sell quality cannabis seeds by providing a germination guarantee in which we promise to replace any duds for free if 90% of your weed seeds fail to germinate.

Feminized Cannabis Seeds (Photoperiods)

Feminized seeds are unable to automatically switch from their vegetative growth stage to their flowering stage without outside intervention in their light cycle. While this may seem like a daunting task to new indoor growers in Aurora, the reality is, not only are there numerous feminized strains like Jillybean and Purple Princess that are otherwise easy for newbies to cultivate, but we also provide a free and highly-informative blog that serves as an invaluable resource on almost everything you need to know about how to grow cannabis indoors, when to flip your plants to flower, etc.

Feminized Autoflowering Seeds

Thanks to the fact that autoflower seeds contain ruderalis in their genetics, they are able to automatically transition to their flowering stage without someone having to adjust their light/dark cycle. The presence of ruderalis also tends to allow them to mature into smaller, faster-flowering more robust plants–all of which are highly advantageous features to growers in Aurora who have a small indoor setup, are inexperienced, and/or want to achieve as many crop rotations as possible in a year.
