Cannabis in San Francisco

The city of San Francisco has a longstanding reputation as unique, progressive, and cosmopolitan. Culturally diverse and enriched with a longstanding arts culture, many associate the Golden City with steep hills, towering bridges, and stunning, Victorian-era architecture. Like many other bustling metropolises, it is also home to a vibrant cannabis culture.

California helped spearhead the shift in attitudes and perceptions of cannabis in the 90s and 2010s by becoming the first state in the nation to legalize medical cannabis in 1996 with Proposition 215, and the fifth state to legalize recreational marijuana in 2016 with Proposition 64.

Below, we take a peek into how aspiring home growers in San Francisco can navigate the process of planting their own, legal garden.

A Brief History of Marijuana in the Golden City

Throughout the early twentieth century, cannabis was legal in the U.S. Cannabis-based products such as tinctures and extracts were marketed for their perceived therapeutic benefits—they were even sold in pharmacies.

In San Francisco, specifically, cannabis was restricted in 1913, although these restrictions were not regularly enforced. The Prohibition Era ushered in a new wave of individuals seeking novel, recreational experiences. Many found that they enjoyed the effects of cannabis, and the plant’s underground popularity grew throughout the Roaring 20s.

As a hub for the countercultural movements of the 1960s and 1970s, San Francisco became somewhat of an epicenter for thriving cannabis culture. The Haight-Ashbury district, specifically, served as the beating heart of this movement and gained notoriety far and wide for its hippie culture and cannabis advocacy.

Cannabis Laws in San Francisco

In 1996, Proposition 215, also known as the Compassionate Use Act, legalized medical marijuana in the state of California. San Francisco was a key player in embracing this change, and the city quickly became home to numerous medical dispensaries.

In November 2016, California voters approved Proposition 64, also known as the Adult Use of Marijuana Act. This legalized recreational cannabis for adults 21 and above. California is also one of just ten states that permits legal, recreational home growing for adults.

Currently, individuals 21 and up may cultivate up to six plants inside their private residence or in a locked, enclosed area on their property. As always, we encourage any aspiring cannabis gardeners to thoroughly research the details of their local laws.

Seed Types 101: Feminized vs Auto-flowering

All of our auto-flowering seeds are feminized—but not all of our feminized seeds are auto-flowering. Let’s dig into the nitty gritty of each seed type!

Feminized Cannabis Seeds

Feminized seeds are a subcategory of photoperiod seeds. Some of our feminized strains include Blue Dream feminized seedsPanama Red feminized seeds, and Cinderella 99 feminized seeds—although these are just three examples from our large selection.

One of the greatest advantages of feminized seeds is that they produce exclusively female plants, ensuring much higher yields than regular seeds, as they typically produce a crop comprised of half male cannabis plants and half female cannabis plants.

Male plants do not contain resin-rich buds—the portion of the plant responsible for cannabis’ effects. If you’ve ever smoked a dried cannabis flower, know that it came from a female plant. Therefore, feminized seeds ensure the entirety of your crop will produce the buds we know and love, while regular cannabis seeds will produce approximately half that amount.

Auto-flowering Seeds

Auto-flowering feminized marijuana seeds have a special ability, thanks to their ruderalis lineage. As the name implies, they flower on their own. If you plan on being an indoor grower, this means you won’t need to adjust your lighting cycles to enter the flowering phase.

This option is particularly useful for novice growers who have not yet researched lighting cycles, or those who simply prefer a lower-maintenance strain such as Purple Lemonade auto-flowering seeds, Master Jedi auto-flowering seeds, or New Glue Auto-flowering seeds.

Auto strains are by no means invincible, but it’s worth noting that they are a bit more resilient and adaptable than your typical feminized seeds. If you have fluctuating weather or are unsure of your cultivating prowess, auto seeds might be your best bet!

Cannabis Species: Landraces, Hybrids, and Beyond

Once upon a time, cannabis exclusively grew in its own natural environment. The very first cannabis species—many of which are still around today—are referred to as “landrace” strains. These types of cannabis strains are either 100% sativa or 100% indica and have remained largely unaltered by humans.

Hybrid strains, on the other hand, are the result of cannabis breeding and merging strain genetics. Hybrids typically contain some mixture of sativa, indica, and to a lesser extent, ruderalis genetics.

Today, there are far more hybrid strains available than landraces. If you’re unsure about which strain you’d like to grow, rest assured each of our high-quality strains is accompanied by an in-depth profile detailing its characteristics, growing traits, flowering stage duration, flavor, taste, and more. This type of info makes finding your perfect strain much simpler.

Indica plants

Indica marijuana plants are an excellent choice for San Franciscans who prefer relaxing effects. These plants are easily distinguishable by their short, compact stature and thick, wide leaves. When consumed, they promote relaxation, physical bliss, and a sense of calm. Because they tend to sedate, indica strains are often ideal for the evening.

Sativa plants

Cannabis sativa is long-stemmed and elegant while its effects are uplifting and energizing. Its elongated leaves will typically have a serrated growth pattern. Known for their cerebral effects, sativa strains are best suited to those seeking defined perceptions and refined mental clarity. Sativa strains can also be useful for boosting motivation and fueling creative thinking.

Hybrids

Just as the name implies, hybrid strains contain a mixture of sativa and indica genetics, and therefore, a mixture of each plant’s respective qualities. Hybrids are highly popular with cannabis enthusiasts because, in a sense, they provide the best of both worlds. Typically, you can expect the mind-sharpening properties of a sativa and the physically calming properties of an indica in one delectable strain.

In fact, the majority of today’s strains are classified as hybrids. Typically, a strain will be described as “indica-dominant” or “sativa-dominant” based on the specific ratio of indica and sativa lineage. For example, a strain with 70% indica to 30% sativa genetics is described as “indica-dominant.” Conversely, if the ratio is 50/50, a strain will likely be described as a “balanced hybrid.”

Are all online seed banks the same?

The short answer is no. While there are plenty of websites that sell cannabis seeds, we at Growers Choice make a point of hand-selecting and lab-testing every one of our seeds. All of our strains are fully feminized cannabis seeds, backed by a 90% germination guarantee, and are supplied by expert breeders who share our passion for high-quality cannabis and cultivating healthy plants.

While providing premium seeds is probably what we’re best known for, our business is built around considering the other side of the gardening equation: you—the home grower. We have articles that span the educational spectrum—from pieces on more niche and complex gardening techniques to the very basics.

With a little up-front research and diligence, even the most novice gardeners can aptly develop their green thumb. Good luck and happy growing!

San Francisco growers know our seeds are top-notch

I think what’s most important when you’re ordering seeds online is being able to trust that you’re going to a) get what you pay for and b) get seeds that actually germinate. Trust is super important here, in my opinion, and I’ve always felt like I can trust Growers Choice. Their seeds are great! Great brand, lots of information on growing and care for your plants, they’ve covered all the bases.

I’ve been looking for a good place to buy cannabis seeds in San Francisco for a long time and I think I’ve found my Shangrila. Growers Choice always has my back. Fast shipping, awesome seeds, and stellar customer service. I’m still learning a lot about growing weed and have found a lot of good practical gardening advice on their website. I don’t think I’d be getting as good of harvests if it weren’t for the information I’ve gotten here. Two thumbs up!
