Cannabis in California

The second-largest city in California, San Diego is famous for its gorgeous beaches, Mediterranean climate, and proximity to the coast. The city boasts idyllic weather and is known for its laid-back vibe—particularly considering its metropolitan size. Rich in cultural diversity, this SoCal city serves as an epicenter for outdoor activities year-round. If you’re looking to buy marijuana seeds in San Diego, you’ve come to the right place.

Like other major cities, San Diego is also home to a vibrant cannabis culture. Today’s thriving cannabis community traces back to California’s longstanding progressive attitudes toward cannabis. Not only is California one of just ten states that permit legal home growing for recreational purposes—it has optimal conditions for outdoor gardens.

A Brief History of Marijuana in California

It may come as a surprise to some, but once upon a time, cannabis was actually legal in the United States. Throughout the early twentieth century, cannabis was not only legal but marketed for its perceived therapeutic benefits. It was not unheard of for individuals to stroll into their local pharmacy and purchase cannabis-containing products such as tinctures and extracts.

Some speculate that cannabis use also increased during Prohibition. With alcohol being outlawed, anecdotal accounts suggest that a notable number of individuals began exploring the effects of cannabis. San Diego—along with the rest of the country—first saw significant federal regulation of marijuana in 1937 with the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937.

In the 1960s and 70s, cannabis experienced a resurgence that dwarfed any popularity it had earned to date. Although illegal, its use was widespread throughout California and the rest of the nation. While its use is most famously associated with hippie culture, festival-goers, and artistic types, its popularity was certainly not limited to these groups.

Recreational Laws in San Diego, California

In 1996, Proposition 215, also known as the Compassionate Use Act, legalized medical marijuana in the state of California. Twenty years later, California voters approved Proposition 64, also known as the Adult Use of Marijuana Act. This legalized recreational cannabis for adults 21 and above.

Individuals 21 and up may now cultivate up to six plants inside their private residence or in a locked, enclosed area on their property. As always, we encourage any aspiring gardeners to thoroughly research their local laws.

Seed Types 101: Feminized vs Auto-flowering

It’s important to note that while all our auto-flowering seeds are feminized, not all our feminized seeds are auto-flowering. There’s no right answer as to which type of seeds are best—more so, it’s a question of which seeds best suit each individual’s unique needs, limitations, and wishes.  Read on to learn the difference between some of the most important seed categories on our site.

Feminized Cannabis Seeds

Feminized seeds are a subcategory of photoperiod seeds that produce exclusively female plants. Why does this matter? In short, a pack of regular seeds will produce both male and female plants. However, female plants are the ones responsible for developing resin-rich buds—the portion of the plant that produces the effects of cannabis we know and love.

Therefore, a batch of feminized cannabis seeds will ensure all your seeds turn into bountiful, usable cannabis—rather than just some. If you’ve ever smoked a dried cannabis flower, know that it came from a female marijuana plant.

Auto-flowering Seeds

As their name suggests, auto-flower seeds flower on their own. Normally, an indoor grower will need to expose their indoor plants to specific cycles of lighting that emulate the periods of direct sunlight they would naturally receive outdoors. The flowering stage is triggered by a switch to 12:12 lighting. This emulates the shorter days of Autumn—the period during which most cannabis plants would normally flower.

Auto-flowering strains such as Blue Cookies Auto-flowering feminized seeds and Purple Lemonade Auto-flowering feminized seeds can serve as excellent low-maintenance options for growers who would prefer not to adjust their light cycles.

Moreover, auto strains tend to be a good choice for beginners because while they are by no means invincible, they can stand up to more human error and tougher weather conditions than feminized seeds.

Cannabis Species 101

Once upon a time, cannabis exclusively grew in its own natural environment. The very first cannabis species—many of which are still around today—are referred to as “landrace” strains These types of cannabis are either 100% sativa—such as Hawaiian Snow feminized seeds, or 100% indica and have remained largely unaltered by humans.

Hybrid strains, on the other hand, are created by crossing sativa and indica plants. The vast majority of the strains we have access to today are hybrids and embody a fine-tuned balance of cerebrally energizing and physically relaxing effects. Some of our more popular hybrids include White Widow Feminized seeds and Jack Herer feminized seeds

If you’re unsure about which strain you’d like to grow, we recommend simply reviewing the in-depth profiles that accompany each of our strains. From indica-leaning hybrids to pure sativa strains and everything in between, you’ll find a thorough overview of each strain’s characteristics, effects, flavor, aroma, and more.

Cannabis Growth Stages

If you live in San Diego and are new to gardening, one of the best things you can do to prepare for your own home grow is to familiarize yourself with the different growing stages of the cannabis plant. Understanding how your plants will behave is key to helping ensure a more bountiful harvest.

Cannabis Seedling Stage

The seedling stage begins when you plant your premium cannabis seeds into their growing medium. One of the most popular types is good old fashioned nutrient-dense soil, but if you’re feeling adventurous, you’re certainly not limited to this method. Growers with a bit of practice under their belt also use techniques such as hydroponics, aeroponics, and others. But, for now, we’ll keep our attention focused on the very basics.

In short, the seedling stage involves your seeds sprouting a “tail.” This tail then fastens itself into the soil and paves the way for developing roots and leaves.

The Vegetative Growth Stage

The vegetative phase is when your plants flourish into their ultimate size and shape. Throughout the vegetative period, your plants will develop beautiful foliage, so long as they are appropriately cared for. New sets of leaves will routinely emerge and become increasingly more robust. Your plants will also grow sturdy, strong stems. By the end of the vegetative stage, your plants will appear quite similar to their ultimate form—but they’re still missing one key component: flowers.

If you’re new to growing, be sure to do a bit of research on lighting, humidity levels, and how to avoid potential pitfalls such as overwatering and nitrogen deficiency.

The Flowering Stage

The flowering stage is arguably the most visually captivating period of your plants’ growth. Throughout this phase, your plants will form. As mentioned above, feminized seeds will require a transition to (typically) 12 hours of darkness and 12 hours of light in order to flower. Autoflower seeds, on the other hand, will simply flower on their own.

As the process begins, you’ll first notice signs your weed plants have begun the “pre-flowering” stage—characterized by wispy, elegant hairs known as “pistils.” As you continue to tend to your plants, they will develop buds (also known as flowers). Depending on the type of strain you select, these buds will have varying colors, density, and other variations in physical characteristics.

You’ve tried the rest, but Growers Choice is the best!

There are so many shysters out there just trying to make a quick buck off people who are in need, I’ve been taken advantage of a few times. Despicable. But Growers Choice is top notch. I’ve never felt like they’re just going to take my money and run. The prices are great for the product, which always gets to you. At least I’ve never lost a shipment. And the result is always good quality. My opinion? Best company going.
