Fairbanks, Alaska: The Golden Heart City

Known as the “Golden Heart City” and located at 65 degrees north latitude in the heart of Alaska’s interior on the Chena River in the Tanana Valley, Fairbanks is the second largest city in the state and one of the prime destinations for seeing the northern lights–as in aurora borealis, and not the award-winning, near-pure indica autoflower strain.

With a rich Native culture preserved by the area’s Indigenous culture holders, breathtaking nature, the northern lights, the Midnight Sun, a thriving arts community, and an incredibly charming downtown area–locals have every reason to be proud to call Fairbanks home. Plus, medical and recreational marijuana are completely legal there!

Alaska and Fairbanks’ Stance on Cannabis

It may be surprising to find out that even though Alaska is a conservative-leaning state, it has a long history of passing progressive medical and recreational cannabis laws, starting in 1998 when it became one of the first in the nation to legalize medical marijuana, and then the third in the entire U.S. to make recreational weed legal in 2014–effective February 24, 2015.

Then, on Halloween 2016 at 4:20 p.m., the first recreational cannabis dispensary in Fairbanks opened its doors, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Medical and Recreational Marijuana Laws in Fairbanks

Interestingly, when medical cannabis was legalized in the Land of the Midnight Sun, the legislation didn’t include an allowance for medical cannabis dispensaries, and then when recreational marijuana was made legal a separate system for registered medical marijuana patients and their caregivers was never created. As such, those with an Alaska Medical Marijuana Registry card in Fairbanks are unlikely to be getting any of the usual sales tax breaks, discounts, special selection or services, etc. that are generally considered to be customary in other states in the U.S. for those who are card-carrying medical marijuana patients.

In addition, unlike other states where both medical and recreational weed are legal, for residents in Fairbanks there aren’t any differences between what a medical marijuana patient and a recreational adult user can purchase, possess, or cultivate. In fact, the only major difference is the age requirement.

To obtain your medical marijuana card, you must be 18 years of age or older, or, if you are under the age of 18 you must have a designated caregiver who is 21 years of age or older. On the other hand, recreational users have to be 21+.

Medical and Recreational Cannabis Cultivation Laws

Provided below are some of the most important laws to be aware of if you are planning to cultivate your own marijuana plants at home in Fairbanks.

  • Medical and adult users who are 21+ may cultivate up to 6 cannabis plants, of which three can be mature female cannabis plants, at home.
  • A maximum of 12 marijuana plants, with up to 6 being mature, are allowed per household–not per 21+ year-old resident.
  • It is legal to gift 1 ounce of cannabis and 6 female cannabis plants to another adult who is 21+ provided no form of remuneration occurs.
  • Marijuana can only be grown on one’s personal private property, and regardless of whether your cannabis garden is indoors or outside, it must be out of public view and inaccessible to minors. Renters must first gain permission from their property manager or homeowner before engaging in at-home cannabis cultivation.
  • At-home growers must institute the appropriate measures to reduce any pungent odors emitting from their indoor cultivation space.

Fairbanks’ Growing Environment

With a growing season that goes from about early June until mid-to-late August with an average of 100 frost-free days and temperatures that rarely exceed the low 70s, dropping into the high 40s at night in the hottest months, growing cannabis outdoors in Fairbanks is often not quite reliable. In addition, seeing as Fairbanks has 70 straight days of sunlight from mid-May until the end of July, outdoor growers are pretty much limited to only growing hardy, fast-flowering feminized strains known as autoflowers; whereas indoor growers in Fairbanks are able to grow both feminized photoperiod strains and autoflowering strains inside year-round.

As such, if you are going to grow an autoflowering strain outside in Fairbanks, you might be better off doing so in a greenhouse where you can keep things a bit warmer and improve the humidity levels since Fairbanks has a generally dry summer climate.

Feminized Cannabis Seeds

The reason that we only sell feminized seed strains that are photoperiods or autoflowers is because they have an almost 100% likelihood of producing all-female plants. This is also why we do not sell regular seeds, as they will produce both male and female plants.

Our feminized cannabis seeds are photoperiods, which makes them reliant on changes in their light cycles to move from their vegetative stage into their flowering stage. While figuring out the whole light schedule thing might sound too difficult for a novice marijuana grower, in reality, there are plenty of easy-to-grow strains like Banana OG and Cactus that beginner growers should be able to find success with–especially because we have a free blog that is filled with educational resources on things like when you can expect your cannabis crops to flower after transitioning them to a 12/12 light cycle, etc.

However, when it comes to growing feminized cannabis strains outside in Fairbanks, even though feminized strains like Runtz Muffin, Matanuska Thunder, and Critical Kush, which were bred for cooler climates, would thrive outside in the area’s summer temperatures, the constant 24 hours of sunlight would be an issue. As such, you’ll probably want to stick to growing your feminized plants in an indoor space.

Autoflowering Seeds

All of our autoflowering strains of seeds are feminized and they contain ruderalis, which allows them to automatically flip to flower irrespective of how many hours of light per day they are or are not getting. So, not only will they provide cultivators with female plants, but they also enter their flowering phase without requiring any outside intervention in their light cycle.

Some of the other advantages that autoflowers tend to offer include the following:

  • Faster-flowering
  • More compact
  • More resilient to sudden changes in temperatures

All of these traits combined can be especially useful to those practicing both indoor and outdoor growing in Fairbanks. For example, the fact that they usually have a faster flowering stage that can be as short as 7-9 weeks means that outdoor cultivators in Fairbanks should be able to get at least one full outdoor harvest from a variety of strains like Ripped Bubba, Mendo Breath, and White Runtz. Furthermore, since autoflowers tend to average 2-4 feet in height, they make for a great indoor growing option once the first frost of the year hits in Fairbanks.

Indicas, Sativas, and Hybrids

Not only are all of our seeds feminized, thereby near-guaranteeing growers all-female plants, but all of our strains are either landrace–a pure indica or pure sativa–or a hybrid strain. Keep on reading to learn more about the main characteristics of indicas, sativas, and hybrids.

Generally, indica plants are short and compact bushy growers that average anywhere between 2-4 feet in height–making them especially advantageous to indoor growers in Fairbanks with limited space or outdoor cultivators who are doing some greenhouse growing.

Structure-wise, indica buds are usually small, round, and tightly packed together, and will often feature deeper shades of green. On average, a pure indica will finish flowering in about 7-9 weeks, while a pure sativa strain can take 12 weeks.

In terms of effects, indicas are often referred to as “in-da-couch” for good reason, as their wonderfully relaxing and sedating physical effects frequently leave users feeling couch-locked. Indicas are usually so soothing that they will often send folks off to the land of nod, which is why they are generally recommended for evening use.

At the other end of the landrace spectrum are sativas, which usually mature into tall, spindly plants with fewer branches than an indica. Often, you will find that the serrated “fingers” of a sativa leaf are more narrow, with visible space between each leaflet. Sativas also have a reputation for producing long buds that are quite “fluffy,” or loose, in their structure.

Not only are sativas the polar opposite of indicas in terms of appearance, but their effects are also the utter antithesis of an indica as they are all about reinvigorating users and providing them with a huge recharge of energy, cerebral euphoria, and clarity. As such, sativas are commonly referred to as “wake-and-bake” strains and are considered to be best used during the day.

The most common, and arguably most popular, strains that our customers in Fairbanks, and, quite frankly, all around the world, seem to be the most hyped about are hybrids. Since hybrids tend to offer the best of both worlds by combining the best traits of sativa and indica strains, users can enjoy both physically relaxing and mentally energizing effects. It makes sense that they’re so popular amongst users and growers!

Lastly, hybrids come in all kinds of indica-to-sativa ratios. Here is a list of some of our best hybrids currently available.
