Ketchikan, Alaska: An Intro

Located at the southernmost entrance of the Inside Passage, which is a world-renowned network of breathtaking waterways in Alaska, Ketchikan has a lot of bragging rights when it comes to its Native culture that is comprised of the Tlingit, Haida, and Tshimian peoples, and jaw-droppingly beautiful scenery, salmon runs, and “wild Alaskan nature.”

Home to the Fjords National Monument, which features crystal blue lakes, snowcapped mountains, and otherworldly mists; and the Tongass National Forest, which is the largest national forest in the country, Ketchikan is an idyllic spot for nature photographers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Ketchikan, which is a quaint yet open-minded town, is said to be the perfect home for both outdoorsy and artsy types, as well as those who love the rain, as this area sees an average of 150 inches of rain on an annual basis. It is also home to a thriving community of medical and recreational cannabis growers and users as all of these things are legal in the state known as “The Last Frontier.”

Cannabis Cultivation and Use in Ketchikan, Alaska

Alaska has a proud history of passing progressive medical and recreational cannabis laws dating back to 1998 when it became one of the first in the U.S. to make medical marijuana legal. Then, in 2014, Alaska became the third state in the nation to pass recreational cannabis legislation that went into effect on February 24, 2015.

Interestingly enough, Alaska’s medical marijuana laws didn’t allow for medical cannabis dispensaries. As such, when recreational marijuana was passed, which included the establishment of dispensaries, a separate system for registered medical marijuana patients and their caregivers was not created. This means that patients who have an Alaska Medical Marijuana Registry card in Ketchikan rarely get any of the usual sales tax breaks, discounts, special selection or services, etc. from their local retail marijuana stores that most medical patients get in the Lower 48.

Another thing that is relatively unique in Ketchikan, and all of Alaska, is that there aren’t any significant differences between what a medical cannabis patient and a recreational adult user can purchase, possess, or cultivate. In fact, the only big difference is the age requirement.

Ketchikan, Alaska Recreational and Medical Cannabis Laws

As mentioned above, the only significant difference for medical and recreational users is the age requirement. Medical patients must be 18 + and recreational users need to be 21+.

Provided in the section below are the most important things you need to know about the indoor and outdoor cultivation of cannabis plants at home in Ketchikan. (For information on usage and possession amounts see here.)

Medical and Recreational Marijuana Laws:

  • Medical and recreational users who are 21+ are allowed to cultivate up to 6 cannabis plants–three of which can be mature weed plants–at home.
  • A maximum of 12 marijuana plants, with up to 6 being mature, are allowed per household–not per 21+ year-old resident.
  • You can only grow cannabis on your private property, and whether it is indoors or out, it must be out of public view and inaccessible to minors. If you are a renter, you must first obtain permission from your property manager or homeowner before starting to grow your own cannabis crops at home.

  • At-home indoor growers must apply the appropriate measures to reduce any pungent odors emitting from the marijuana plants in their indoor cultivation space. (For example, using exhaust fans and carbon filters is highly recommended.)

Indoor and Outdoor Cultivation in Ketchikan

With a short growing season where temps are generally warm from the beginning of June until the first week of September, soil that usually requires mulching and/or composting, and up to almost 20 hours of daylight during the summer, most cultivators in Ketchikan tend to grow their cannabis indoors where it’s easier for them to create and control the growing environment–especially as many strains, like Pineapple Express and Blue Dream, tend to require warmer settings. In addition, feminized seed strains, which are photoperiods, have a very specific number of hours of light they need during their vegetative stage and during their flowering period.

However, this is not to say that it is entirely impossible to grow various indica and sativa strains outdoors in Ketchikan. However, those who practice the outdoor growing of cannabis in this area usually do so in a greenhouse, or they use a cold frame, row cover, or hoop house. In addition, they tend to only grow autoflowering strains, like Northern Lights and Violator Kush, outside–the reasons for why, we will address in the sections below.

Feminized Photoperiod Seeds

Feminized cannabis strains, unlike regular seeds, have a 99% likelihood of maturing into female plants. It is for this reason that we at Growers Choice only sell weed seeds in their feminized form, be they autoflowering or photoperiod plants.

Feminized photoperiod cannabis plants are unable to automatically transition from their vegetative phase to their flowering stage without a manual change being made to their light and dark cycle from what is usually an 18/6 light cycle to a 12/12 light schedules. For the reasons mentioned above, those who live in Ketchikan either have to grow their feminized strains indoors or in an outdoor structure where they can prevent light from streaming. However, most just stick with growing their marijuana indoors where they can use a light timer for their LED lights.

Feminized Autoflowering Seeds

Autoflowering seeds are feminized strains that have been genetically altered by having the hardy Central Asian landrace strain of ruderalis added to them. This means that not only can they automatically flip from their vegetative growth stage to their flowering phase without having their light cycle changed, but they also tend to produce faster-growing, smaller, and hardier plants than their feminized photoperiod counterparts.

Indicas vs. Sativas vs. Hybrids

All of our feminized seeds are either landrace–a pure indica or pure sativa–or hybrid strains. In the subsections below are some of the most important traits you need to know about these three strain types.

Indicas

Indicas are known to be short, bushy growers that average anywhere between 2-4 feet in height, which makes them well-suited for indoor growing in smaller spaces or those with limited outdoor space be it on a balcony or in a greenhouse, etc.

The hallmarks of indica buds, when it comes to their structure and composition, is that they are usually small, round, and dense. On average, a pure indica, like Master Kush, has a flowering time of approximately 7-9 weeks, while a pure sativa strain, like Panama Red, can take up to 12 weeks.

In terms of effects, indicas are beloved for their potently relaxing effects that often leave users feeling couch-locked. In fact, these strains can have such relaxing effects that they will often have users ready to hit the hay within a relatively short amount of time, which is why they are usually best used in the late afternoon or evening.

Sativas

Sativas are the caffeinated-version of cannabis, as they are noted for their powerful energetic effects, which is why they are often dubbed “wake-and-bake” strains, as some users prefer to start their day off with a mood-boosting charge that is all about providing wakefulness, euphoria, and sharpened mental focus.

In terms of their size and bud structure, sativas have a reputation for producing tall plants that feature fewer branches than an indica. Often, you will find that the serrated “fingers” of a sativa leaf are more narrow, with visible space between each leaflet. Sativas also have a reputation for providing growers with elongated buds that are much looser in their structure than an indica.

Generally speaking, pure sativas tend to produce smaller yields than indicas, but the size of their buds can more than compensate for somewhat smaller harvests.

Hybrids

Hybrid strains are a combination of sativa and indica strains and are known for providing both users and growers with the best of both worlds by combining the best traits of sativa and indica strains.

One of the advantages that hybrids offer growers is that there are sativa-dominant strains that will grow short and bushy like an indica, and there are indica-dominant hybrids that will produce indica-sized yields with buds that are large like a sativa.

Their advantage for users is that effects-wise they offer both mentally stimulating and physically relaxing effects at varying degrees depending on whether they are indica- or sativa-dominant, or an even 50/50 split of the two.
